I was asked the other morning by my 6 am client the difference between Aerobic training and Anaerobic training.
A relatively important and common question that I answered much to quickly and briefly. Give me a break.... it was 6 a...... brain function at 6 am is lacking:)
So here is a clearer description of the two.
The term aerobic means "in the presence of oxygen".
When it comes to physical exercise, aerobic refers to activity of moderate intensity lasting anywhere from 30 minutes and longer. (However even after 2 minutes you are in an oxygenated required state.)
Actions such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing will all fall into the category, and are therefore known as Cardio.
The term anaerobic means "in the absence of oxygen".
When it comes to physical exercise, any action of short high intensity bursts lasting seconds to a few minutes is known as anaerobic.
Heavy weight lifting, strength training, sprinting and some sports such as football and hockey are categorized as anaerobic.
IS ONE BETTER THAN THE OTHER???
While aerobic exercise builds endurance and stamina, strengthens the heart and lungs while also metabolising fats for energy, therefore aiding in body fat loss.
Anaerobic exercise builds strength and mass, which allows your body to burn more fat while active as well as while at rest.
Someone looking to gain significant size will likely want to minimize their aerobic activity with fear of losing hard earned muscle mass, as muscle glycogen is eventually used as fuel once the readily available energy is gone.
So NO, one isn't better than the other, they really do work best in combination.Keep a strong heart, strong lungs, stamina, endurance AND strong lean muscles.
