Here are the reasons.....
Making sense of why the fad diets need to be a thing of the past….
What fad diets generally do is drastically limit calorie intake, and more importantly carbohydrates. Restricting carbohydrates will cause the body to use stored muscle glycogen for energy, instead of readily available carbohydrates from food. What this means is that you are now using muscle for energy. Think about this a little, muscle is what gives your body the desired shapely form, and now your using it for energy.???!!!
This means that you will lose muscle mass. You will lose your firm tone and shape, all just so you can 'weigh' less.
The famous hopeful goal is "I only want to lose 10 pounds" and so fad diets such as South Beach, Atkins and Slim Fast were born. They all work the same, they all promise the same they just have different titles. These diets work in stages, usually three.
The first stage is the carbohydrate depletion stage. This is where the initial weight loss happens. This is where they hook you!! The weight that is lost in this stage is 100% water weight and muscle tissue. Is that really the weight you want dot lose???
**HOLD THAT THOUGHT**
What is important to people anyway? Are you more concerned with your overall weight? Or your overall body fat percentage? Are you thinking aesthetically or physical health??
Have you heard the term skinny fat? You know the people who at first glance are thin, and wearing a size 4 ( for some reason this is desirable to many) At a closer glance their body fat percentage is sometimes close to overweight people. This is due to lack of muscle tissue and likely a sever lack in proper nutrition. Have you ever desired to 'be' skinny fat?? Do you still???
Body fat percentage is so incredibly more important than overall weight. The beautiful men and women in fitness that we all at one time or another have wished was us, weigh a lot more than you would think, and its due to a LEAN muscle mass and low body fat percentage.
Somewhere along the road of life something went wrong and we have society believing that you have to weigh a certain amount to be accepted as 'fit'. What has to be done to change the focus onto body fat and not weight?????
Back to the fad's…..
Stage one brings the overall weight down, and participants are thrilled. Once your desired weight has been achieved you are then 'allowed' to move onto stage two.
Stage two which is usually about 2-3 weeks into the diet, you are allowed to incorporate small amounts of carbohydrates again in the form of fruits and some whole grain. The weight loss begins to slow down at this point, as you ideally have already reached your ideal weight. From here you are allowed to begin incorporating carbohydrates back into your normal lifestyle. This is now where the weight will in most cases begin to come back, as you really haven't made any legit changes in your life that would allow for proper weight management.
It's a yo-yo effect, and it's unhealthy for your system. There are millions of men and women who regularly participate in fad diets multiple times per year, every year to hit a certain goal weight for a special event.
I ask you… WHY???
I assume at this point its purely aesthetics that you are concerned about.
It amazes me how little society actually cares about their health, and how much the initial appearance runs their life.
I am only one voice, and a voice that many haven't heard yet, but I ask you, if you are someone who shares my thoughts and concerns on the topic of fad diets please use your voice as well.Let people hear you, and perhaps we together can change the thought path of even a few regular dieters.
Amen! The only ones who should concern themselves with numbers are those who do things which deal with weight classes.
