Body image is a term generally geared towards women in our society. It may not be discussed as openly as women, but the men in our lives struggle with the same problems we do.
No, I am not a psychologist, but hear me out.
At what point in our society did it become acceptable to make judgment on others due to their outward appearance. Their weight, their hair colour, their shape, their clothes and so on. What happened to their sense of morals, their sense of humour their intelligence??
I have quite a few clients with various different body shapes and sizes. With these differences in their outward appearances, they all share a very similar inner demon, which I blame entirely on out society over the last 10-20 years.
One client in particular, is a stunningly beautiful middle aged woman who has already had huge success on her weight loss journey.
I believe her internal demons probably began years ago, but even with the physical changes and positive new outlook on life, her demon still gets the best of her.
Still the feeling lies of not being good enough for the opposite sex. The strong sense of not being the beautiful woman in the room or not being noticed at all, are all very dominant feelings inside of her.
As an outsider, I see nothing but a happy, funny, intellectual, pretty, very pretty, and dedicated woman who should be so in love with herself it would make one sick.
Now there are SO many women AND Men who feel NOT GOOD ENOUGH, too fat, too short, too tall, too whatever it is.......
WHO .... please give me a name of the man or woman that set the rule of what we are SUPPOSED to look like. I have a few words for them!!
Lets go back in history a bit and look at some high profile names of women who are considered SEXY and PLUS SIZE.
Mia Tyler - size 14
Emme - size 14
Serena Williams - size10-12
Christina Hendricks - size 14
Marilyn Monroe- size 12-16
All stunningly beautiful and SEXY..... and all plus sized and embracing every aspect of being the curvaceous feminine woman that they are.
Now, of course I am in the business of helping people reach their fitness goals and believe that carrying too much excess weight is unhealthy, I also believe that you should embrace and support yourself in every step of the journey.
Starting at a size 20? Fabulous, dress your body appropriately, and love it..... soon you will be a size 18, and then 16. Beautiful, again learn how to dress appropriately and you will look incredible.
That's another problem I find, is women don't know how to dress their body. Especially when you are losing weight.
Baggy clothes- yes i know you think you are hiding your size, but in fact ladies...... and gentlemen... you are adding SO MUCH unnecessary bulk and you now appear heavier than you actually are.
Know your shape, and dress accordingly. You will surprise yourself at how great you will look and feel wearing something that actually fits you!
When you are losing weight at a steady rate of a couple of pounds per week and your clothes are starting to loosen up and even fall off :) Yet you still cant "see" anything different, you know that those little demons are still in there, they have brainwashed you.
Does it not make sense to you that if your clothes are fitting differently and the scale is lower, even 3 pounds, that there would likely be a physical change??
Take a good hard look, shut the demons out, take back the power. this is YOUR physical body, not theirs. This body belongs to NOBODY except for you, and therefore no other opinions or thoughts should have an ounce of importance.
Start with 1 small thing about yourself that you love.... your eyes, your hair colour, your hands, your smile even your laugh. Whatever it is that you LOVE, love it, talk about it, give attention to it as much as you can.
Everyday, find something else that you love, and again, give it attention, love it, own it.
There is no universal scale that we are supposed to measure up to, you know this and i know this. The demons are brainwashing us all..... and its time to shut them up :)
Love every curve, every muscle, every inch of that fantastic physical body you have.
